Superintendent outlines food pantry pilot, meal account fee change and specialty program deadlines; announces tentative wage agreement

Food pantries: Dr. McDade said the Prince William County Community Foundation is partnering with the division to establish designated food pantry spaces with shelving at 12 schools (C. D. Hylton, Unity Reed, Unity Braxton, Lake Ridge, Enterprise, Occoquan, Sudley, Penn, Reagan, Minnieville, Parkside, and Mullen). The goal is to prepare the spaces and launch the pantry before the end of the school year.
Meal account convenience fee: Dr. McDade said that beginning March 1, 2025, families will no longer be charged a convenience fee when they use MySchoolBucks to add funds to student meal accounts. Additional information will be provided to families in coming weeks.
Specialty program deadline: She reminded the public that the registration deadline to apply to the division's 37 specialty programs is Feb. 1 (Center for Fine and Performing Arts closed earlier on Dec. 14). Staff are holding information and application assistance sessions through Feb. 1.
Tentative wage agreement: Dr. McDade told the board that PWCS and the Prince William Education Association (PWEA) had reached a tentative wage agreement covering more than $160,000,000 over two years. The superintendent said staff will receive detailed communication and webinars explaining scale improvements and illustrations of how compensation changes will affect employees over the next two years. The board noted the agreement is subject to PWEA ratification; the board will vote after ratification.
Capital planning and budget schedule: Dr. McDade previewed the FY 2026 proposed budget and CIP schedule: presentation to the board Feb. 5, public meeting Feb. 10, public hearing Feb. 19, work session March 12, and board approval March 19, followed by submission to the Prince William County Board of Supervisors.
No formal board action was taken on these announcements during the meeting.
