The Sebastian City Council on Jan. 22 approved Resolution R‑25‑02 to accept a public transportation grant agreement from the Florida Department of Transportation to fund construction of a new taxiway at the city airport.
City staff said the grant covers a portion of construction costs and the city has budgeted a 20% local match from discretionary sales tax revenues. Staff expects a second portion of the state grant after FDOT’s July 1 fiscal year start; staff said bidding will wait until funding is confirmed.
An airport representative described the project as the first of multiple phases to open the airport’s northwest corner for development: the new taxiway (phase one), an adjacent apron (phase two) and later access roads and utilities (phase three). The speaker said the Federal Aviation Administration did not participate in this portion, but FDOT agreed to fund the work and is expected to support a second grant installment later this year.
Council approved the resolution by roll call: Council member Nunn — yes; Mayor McPartland — yes; Vice Mayor Jones — yes; Council member Dixon — yes; Council member Dodd — yes. The motion carried.
