The Finance and Government Operations Committee on Jan. 22 received a report from the Employee Services Agency on the county’s bereavement policy and the notification process for families of employees who die while employed by Santa Clara County.
Rhonda Schmidt, Employee Benefits Director in the Employee Services Agency, presented the report and answered committee questions. Vice Chairperson Ellenberg said she appreciated the report’s explanation of how the county engages with families and the effort to speed notifications so survivors can quickly learn what benefits they may receive. Chair Cheri Young asked staff to provide an off‑agenda update that designates a team of two to three staff who would manage the notification process to ensure consistent family interactions across cases.
The committee voted to receive the report. No public comment was received on this item at the meeting.
Why it matters: A designated response team could improve consistency and reduce delay when county employees die in service, helping families understand benefits and next steps in a time-sensitive situation.
