Commission approves SHIP incentives report to preserve $2.6 million in state housing funds

The Brevard County Board of County Commissioners on Jan. 14 approved the county’s annual State Housing Initiatives Partnership (SHIP) incentive strategy report, a required update that preserves the county’s eligibility to receive SHIP funds from the Florida Housing Finance Corporation. Staff said the county’s SHIP allocation for the year is approximately $2,600,000.
County staff explained SHIP is funded by state documentary stamp taxes and may be used for emergency repairs, new construction, rehabilitation, down-payment and closing-cost assistance, and as matching dollars for federal housing programs. Staff referenced Florida statute 420.9076 (affordable-housing incentive strategies and committees) and explained that participating municipalities and the county must maintain an affordable housing advisory committee and submit an annual incentives report as a condition of program participation.
Staff showed examples of recent SHIP-funded repairs — a walk-in shower with grab bars, an electric service-panel replacement, a full roof replacement and an HVAC condenser replacement — and noted that SHIP dollars are used to help preserve and produce affordable homeownership and multifamily housing.
Commissioner Atkinson moved to approve the SHIP incentives report; Commissioner Delaney seconded. The motion passed on a 5-0 roll call.
Ending: With board approval, the county remains eligible for the state SHIP allocation and staff will continue to administer projects under the program’s eligible uses.
