Regional Housing Council appoints two members to Homeless Services Advisory Board

The Thurston County Regional Housing Council unanimously appointed Michael Jenkins and Dana Evans to the Homeless Services Advisory Board on Jan. 22.
Kevin Hill, Thurston County staff, said the advisory board held interviews on Jan. 7 and recommended the two applicants. The homeless services advisory board’s interview panel included Chair Candace Carmen and Sharlaya (name variant in transcript) Messinger, who both supported the appointments.
The council moved and seconded the appointments during the meeting; Carolyn Cox (Lacey representative) moved to appoint the two candidates and Commissioner Emily Clouse seconded the motion. The RHC recorded a unanimous vote in favor.
Who the appointees are: Michael Jenkins is a resident of Lacey with experience in direct services across the community and in neighboring Pierce County. Dana Evans is the current Built for 0 coordinator at Family Support Center and said they have lived experience with housing instability and homelessness. Evans also noted they use he/him and she/her pronouns and said they were “excited to bring that lived experience to these advisory boards.”
Term and process: The appointments are three-year terms ending December 2027. Kevin Hill said the Homeless Services Advisory Board currently has 10 official members; rules set a minimum of eight and a maximum of 14.
Why it matters: The advisory board advises county staff and the RHC on homelessness strategy and program priorities; both new members bring direct-service and lived-experience perspectives the interview panel judged relevant to the board’s work.
Next steps: The council congratulated the appointees and invited brief introductions from Jenkins and Evans during the meeting. The Homeless Services Advisory Board will fold the new members into its regular work and ongoing grant and program planning.
