IT contractors and district IT staff inspected the building and reported that classrooms have multiple Cat-5 drops already run and that the facility is wired but would likely need new switches and wireless access points. One attendee said the building “is actually in pretty good shape” and that the principal network issues are 10-year-old Cisco switches that should be replaced to support municipal use.
The board also discussed fiber connectivity: the building currently has a Charter drop but staff said an MBI/MBI-related fiber (regional dark fiber) was not confirmed and that the town may need an MBI/MBI/MBI (MBI) drop to match the district’s network. Staff suggested the town confirm an MBI/MBI fiber connection and consider costs for cameras, door access and switches; those items could be candidates for the Community Compact IT grant.
Board members raised questions about equipment ownership and transfer. School-district IT staff indicated some equipment in the building (switches, access points) might be removed and that the town should plan to buy replacements or seek grant funding for upgrades. The board asked staff to prepare a materials list and cost estimate to support a grant application and to coordinate with the district on which components would remain.
