Parks and Rec seeks design funds for Elliott Elementary outdoor spaces

Stacy Mulroy, director of Parks and Recreation for the Town of Needham, asked the Community Preservation Committee for design funding on Jan. 22 to develop options for outdoor recreation at Elliott Elementary School.
"Elliot has been in the DPW park and rec 5 year athletic facilities capital plan for over 5 years," Mulroy told the committee, describing the site as an 8-acre school parcel with 1.5 acres dedicated to outdoor recreation and roughly 450 students who use the space.
Mulroy said the design contract would include a steering committee with school department representatives, user groups and neighbors, and that the town would use pre-approved on-call engineering firms to fast-track design if CPC and Town Meeting funding are approved. Possible solutions the design will consider include rebuilding the pony (60-foot) baseball field, replacing or upgrading the basketball court, and converting playground engineered wood-fiber surfacing to an accessible poured-in-place rubber surface. Mulroy said a synthetic turf field is one of the options and is not off the table.
No formal vote was taken; the request was presented to the CPC for consideration ahead of the town manager’s and town meeting processes.
