The Germantown Board of Mayor and Aldermen on Monday, Jan. 13 approved two temporary on-premise beer-sale permits for coronation fundraising events at the Great Hall and Conference Center and approved the consent agenda, which included a construction contract for a Houston High School traffic signal. The board also recessed earlier to convene Germantown’s beer board and approved the two temporary beer permits there.
The beer board approved temporary on-premise beer permits for two coronation events scheduled at the Great Hall and Conference Center (1900 S. Germantown Road): one on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025, and a second on Friday, Jan. 31, 2025. Clerk Bettie reported that the events provided evidence of nonprofit or charitable status and that licensed Tennessee servers would be used. Alderman Sanders moved both approvals; the first was seconded by Vice Mayor Gibson and the second by Alderman Yulecki. After no public comment, the board voted in favor of both permits. Alderman Sanders said he reviewed the applications and that they appeared complete: “I plan to support the application,” he said.
The consent agenda was presented and approved as a block. Items read into the record included appointments to multiple boards and commissions (Historic Commission appointment of Angela Griffith; Natural Resources Commission chair Joe Skelly; Neighborhood Preservation Commission appointment Michelle Morgan), contracts for park work and on-call stormwater engineering, donations to the Germantown Education Commission, and a development contract for a Chipotle location, among others. The consent agenda also included a contract for the Houston High School traffic signal project; Alderman Hicks requested that staff provide more detailed information beyond the agenda sheet for the benefit of the board and community.
An assistant administrator updated the board on the Houston High School traffic-signal project, noting the project is funded 100% by state and federal Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) funds and must follow Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) requirements. The construction contract presented to the board lists completion within 1 year and 3 months; staff said an earlier preconstruction schedule will provide more detail and that coordination with school traffic and utility relocation will affect sequencing. Staff also warned of long lead times for signal hardware, citing roughly 52 weeks in prior projects for signal materials procurement.
Roll calls for the beer-permit votes and the consent agenda recorded all members present voting to approve those items. No public objections were recorded during the beer-board public hearings.
Items approved on consent that were called out in the meeting included: amendment No. 2 for legal services for city attorney work; the Houston High traffic signal construction contract (and a related contract amendment); a development contract for Chipotle (2110 West Street); park- and athletic-complex contracts; and recognition of criminal forfeiture funds. Board members asked staff to provide additional project detail on the Houston High signal for the public file.
The beer board adjourned after approving the two temporary permits; the BMA reconvened and proceeded with the regular agenda.
