Bethel Park Council on Jan. 13 administered the oath of office to Justin McDowell, swearing him in as a police officer for the municipality.
The oath was given by Judge Arnone and accepted by McDowell, who repeated the pledge to support and defend the constitutions of the United States and the commonwealth and to enforce local ordinances. After the ceremony, the police chief welcomed McDowell to the department and community.
“Bethel Park is a special community to work for. It is very welcoming and the residents are very supportive of the police department,” the police chief said, praising McDowell’s hiring and urging the new officer to “always honor and respect” the badge and name tag. The chief also noted McDowell relocated from New Jersey to attend testing and training and graduated from the police academy last month.
The ceremony included the council’s moment of silence earlier in the meeting for former President Jimmy Carter and longtime Bethel Park Volunteer Fire Company member Joe Serto.
The swearing-in concludes the hiring and academy phase; no separate council action was required beyond the ceremonial oath.
The council moved on to other agenda items after the oath and brief remarks.
