Leonardtown students present Veterans Day essays at county meeting; commissioners and community praise veterans

Four Leonardtown Elementary students read winning Veterans Day essays at the Saint Mary's County Board of County Commissioners meeting on Nov. 10, 2009, and county leaders presented formal commendations.
Students spoke about the meaning of Veterans Day and the sacrifices made by service members. Emma Gilligan said, "Remember them. Honor our brave veterans. They did so much." Marquez Brice described the "great silence" ceremony observed at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 and called veterans "very courageous." Grant Wolf spoke about his pride that his father served 20 years in the military and urged listeners to observe a two‑minute silence "to honor the veterans that gave their time and even sometimes their life for our freedom." Alyssa Bayes Moore recounted the history of Nov. 11 and described ceremonies such as parades, the placing of flowers at the Tomb of the Unknowns and community floats.
Commissioner President Jesse Russell presented each student with a signed commendation and thanked them and their teacher for participating. Commissioners encouraged residents to attend local Veterans Day events and noted a parade and ceremonies in Leonardtown the following day at 10 a.m., as well as an additional event at 2 p.m. in Helen.
The presentations were part of the county's Veterans Day observances and the meeting record includes the students' remarks and the board's commendations.
