Board backs Housing Authority's $21,703 Community Legacy application for Lexington Park facility upgrades

The Board of County Commissioners approved a resolution supporting the Housing Authority's FY2012 Community Legacy application for $21,703 to repair and upgrade an HVAC system and add Category 6 networking at a Norris Road community facility in Lexington Park.
Housing Authority representatives said the facility supports organized team sports and academic-mentoring activities for local youth under programs such as Impact Sports and Academic Services. Dennis, a Housing Authority representative, told commissioners the facility is aging and volunteers, many from local firms, provide coaching and program support; the requested state funds would be used to improve indoor air quality and add networking to support tutoring and program operations.
Crystal Wojcakoski, acting program manager for the county's community development division, said the Housing Authority leveraged the county-owned facility and volunteer efforts to keep programming running and that the Community Legacy program (to be renamed Sustainable Communities by the state) is a competitive, neighborhood-focused grant. She asked the board to sign a support resolution required for the state application.
Commissioner Todd B. Morgan moved to authorize the President to sign the support resolution for the Housing Authority's Community Legacy application in the amount of $21,703. Commissioner Lawrence De Jarbo seconded; the motion carried by voice vote.
Staff said the work would preserve an older Housing Authority facility (identified in remarks as Tubman Douglas, an older project) and improve program delivery for youth in Lexington Park.
