Vermont health commissioner outlines budget-adjustment requests for abortion medication stock, prevention programs and health-equity grants

Dr. Mark Levine, commissioner of the Vermont Department of Health, told a legislative budget hearing on Jan. 23 that the department is seeking several one-time budget adjustments to cover technology service costs, ensure continuity of reproductive-care medication access, expand substance-misuse prevention and fund health-equity community grants.

Levine said the department has three appropriations affected by the governor’s budget adjustment: administration and support; public health; and substance use. He described a $100,000 general-fund request to purchase a one-year stock of two medications used for medication abortion — mifepristone and misoprostol — to be held by Planned Parenthood of Northern New England “to help assure uninterrupted care, uninterrupted access to care for patients in Vermont.”

Why it matters: Levine and lawmakers discussed supply-chain risks and the practical effect of a short shelf life for one of the drugs.
