The Riverton City Council re‑performed leadership selections Jan. 21 after a public challenge to the prior process. Councilmember Mike Bailey was elected council president by voice vote (six ayes to one for Councilwoman Borders). Councilmember Carla Borders was elected council vice president unanimously.
Administrative Services Director Mia Harris explained the council had chosen to repeat the voting by voice to cure any potential open‑meeting questions raised about the previous internal balloting process. Councilmembers nominated and voted in open session; the mayor recorded the vote tallies for the record.
Separately, the council appointed Kimberly Hummel to a vacant seat on the Riverton Rendezvous Balloon Committee. Hummel previously served on the committee and the appointment filled the committee’s sole vacancy.
Why it matters: Council leadership roles define who presides in the mayor’s absence and who may sign contracts or act for the mayor when authorized. The naming of a balloon‑festival committee member restores the panel to full membership and supports event planning.
