Delegation hails I‑81 restoration in MDOT capital plan; says work must continue through session

Members of the Washington County delegation said Maryland Department of Transportation funding for Interstate 81 was restored to the capital improvement plan, a step delegation members called a significant win for Washington County and Western Maryland.

At the delegation’s meeting, former delegate Carl Anderson said, “I’m excited to see I 81 in the budget,” and described the entry of planning money as a sign the project will continue to advance. Senator Paul Quarterman and other delegation members credited coordinated local advocacy for getting the item back into the plan.

The restoration in the MDOT CIP includes continuing design funding and — according to delegation discussion — a movement of the project into the construction phase in the agency’s plan. Delegation members emphasized the item still must survive the remainder of the legislative session before funds are final. “It was a big big win for Washington County yesterday, and now we’ll have to work to, make sure that money stays in here throughout the session,” Quarterman said.

County officials and local advocates who joined the meeting said the outcome reflects sustained effort across local government, the business community and the delegation. Delegation members noted the project’s importance for regional economic vitality and safety and said they will keep meeting with state leaders in Annapolis during the session to maintain momentum.

The delegation did not provide dollar amounts or a timetable for construction at the meeting. Delegation leaders said they will continue outreach to state officials and update the county as additional budget actions occur.

The delegation also reminded members about upcoming meetings in Annapolis and said staff will circulate contact information and maps referenced during the session.
