Marion County referendum oversight committee elects officers, approves 2024 report and calendar

The Independent Citizens Referendum Oversight Committee voted unanimously Thursday to elect Ken Ausley as chair, Floyd Magwood as vice chair and Diana Williams as secretary and approved committee minutes and a 2024 annual report that documents how referendum proceeds were used.
The committee, created under updated bylaws the Marion County School Board adopted Sept. 26, 2023, also set quarterly meeting dates for 2025 (April 17, July 17 and Oct. 16). The committee’s responsibilities include producing an annual report for the school board; the newly adopted bylaws require four meetings a year and allow two‑year member terms with options for reappointment across the referendum’s four‑year span.
Committee members opened the meeting with nominations and voice votes. A motion to approve the minutes from the October meeting carried, and the committee then voted to approve the chair’s annual report summarizing the committee’s 2024 work and the district’s use of the 1‑mill ad valorem referendum proceeds. The chair said the committee will present a verbal report to the school board during the school year as required by the bylaws.
The annual report submitted to the committee documents that, based on materials reviewed and school visits conducted in 2024, referendum proceeds were used for safe schools, reading, physical education, art, music, library/media, vocational programs, class‑size reduction and retention of state‑certified teachers and paraprofessionals. The committee approved the report after a motion and second and a unanimous voice vote.
No public comments were offered during the required public comment period, and the committee adjourned after approving the meeting schedule for the year.
