DeSoto County Schools board recognizes seniors who scored 30 or higher on ACT

The DeSoto County Schools Board of Education on Jan. 23 recognized seniors from multiple district high schools who scored 30 or higher on the ACT and presented medals to students and families.
Superintendent Mr. Austin opened the recognition during his report and asked principals to bring forward students who earned the score. "I appreciate y'all allowing us the opportunity to recognize these amazing students," said Nick Tungen, principal of Horn Lake High School, as he introduced his students.
Principals who presented students included Nick Tungen of Horn Lake High School, Dr. Bobby Davis of Lake Center (identified in the meeting as Lake County Center), and Adam Sykes of Southaven High School. Students named during the recognitions included Anaya Halls, June Blakely, Davis Boresight, Kaden Aaron, Parker Britton, Taylor LaVour, James Middleton, Nick Gaines and others listed by each school. The superintendent also recognized Olive Branch High School students later in the meeting after a brief recess; those names included Jacob Strickland, Evan Brand, Ethan Chen, Eric Decolor, Ethan McDermott, Eva Mercer and Elijah Hill, and the board read the names of two students reported to have graduated in December: Crossley Jones and Brandy Stevenson.
Board members and district staff gathered at the front to hand out medals and take group photos. Superintendent Mr. Austin reiterated praise for the students and thanked parents and family members in attendance: "I want to congratulate our students once again. Great job. I know y'all are looking forward to graduation this upcoming May."
The recognition took place during the superintendent's report and stretched across two portions of the meeting because Olive Branch High School students arrived after a brief recess. No formal action or vote was associated with the recognition; it was presented as part of the superintendent's report and ceremonial acknowledgments.
Board chair motioned to adjourn at the conclusion of business and set the next meeting for Thursday, Feb. 6 at 3 p.m.
