Andrea Lee, a Unified Sports coach in RSU 22, was presented the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Maine Coach of the Year award in Unified Sports during the school board meeting.
The honor was announced by Mike Bisson, assistant executive director at the Maine Principals Association, who said the NFHS recently added Unified Sports as a category for state-level coach recognitions. Bisson said he and the selection committee “have to start with Andrea Lee and Mike Burnham,” and that the committee was “very proud to present you with the NFHS Maine coach of the year in Unified Sports.”
The award recognizes Lee’s work starting RSU 22’s Unified Sports program and her long involvement with Special Olympics. Superintendent Raymond told the board that Special Olympics programs and Unified Sports have been “huge in RSU 22 for many, many years” and credited Lee and local partners for the program’s popularity.
Lee said she was surprised and honored to receive the recognition as the first recipient in Maine for this category. She credited school leadership, volunteers and families and noted the program’s competitive success, referring to seasons that produced “two gold balls and a silver ball” when describing team results.
District staff also announced upcoming events tied to the Unified Sports program: a motor activities training program to be hosted at Camden Academy on March 26 and a district track meet scheduled for May 14 with a rain date of May 21. The board packet lists those dates as district-hosted opportunities intended to involve students across RSU 22.
The recognition and the event announcements together highlight the board’s emphasis on inclusive athletics and ongoing district support for Unified Sports and Special Olympics activities.
