Caroline County wins two SmartScale transportation project awards totaling $16 million

Caroline County will receive recommendations for two SmartScale transportation projects, county staff announced at the Jan. 23 Planning Commission meeting.
Staff said the Commonwealth Transportation Board recommended funding improvements at the Lake Caroline–Route 1 intersection ($9,000,000) and the Page Road–Route 1 intersection ($7,000,000). According to the announcement, both projects were submitted without local leverage and therefore are expected to be fully funded by the Commonwealth.
A staff member told commissioners the program’s timing typically means funds become available about six years after award; that schedule could accelerate if other funds become available. County staff thanked Lake Caroline residents and the county Transportation Committee for outreach that helped the applications, and staff noted the Page Road project was the highest-rated project in the state during the scoring process.
No formal action or funding-commitment vote occurred at the Planning Commission meeting; staff said final award adoption by the Commonwealth Transportation Board is scheduled in June and that project delivery timing depends on state scheduling and available funds.
