Sandpoint seeks $600,000 WIF grant to overhaul City Beach parking and launch; Bonner County committee backs application

The Bonner County Waterways Advisory Committee on Jan. 23 voted to support the City of Sandpoint’s application to the Waterways Infrastructure Fund (WIF) for a phased overhaul of City Beach parking, boat ramps and docks.
Jason, a City of Sandpoint parks representative, outlined a three‑year plan beginning with resurfacing the parking area that serves boat‑trailer parking. “We’re looking at about $700,000 for the engineering and construction of, basically tearing out, grinding up the asphalt, regrading, resurfacing, and doing stormwater treatment,” Jason said. Under the plan he described, the city would provide a $100,000 match and request $600,000 from WIF for the first phase.
Committee members asked about grant rules, the fund balance and whether other counties are applying for large grants; Jason said he had discussed the proposal with Kathy Muir of the grant program, who encouraged a strong application and suggested asking for needed funds. The discussion noted that WIF rules changed in recent years to allow higher county shares and that larger infrastructure applications are being favored over requests for watercraft alone.
After discussion, the committee approved a motion to support the City of Sandpoint’s grant application; the chair said he will sign the committee’s letter of support for inclusion in the final packet. The committee requested a copy of the final grant proposal for its records.
