The Columbiana City Council on Jan. 21 appointed Robert Kato to fill the vacant council seat for the unexpired term ending Dec. 31, 2025.
The council voted unanimously to appoint Kato. When called for roll-call votes, Councilmembers Titilio, Liston, Graham, Banner and Souder each announced their vote for Robert Kato. The mayor said the swearing-in will take place at the council's next meeting on Feb. 4.
The council had previously received four letters of interest for the vacancy from Robert Keto, Jeff Bacho, Jeff Stoy and Rob Hall. The mayor thanked all applicants and said the applicants were “very good candidates.”
Council members did not debate the appointment at length at the Jan. 21 meeting. After the appointment the council directed staff to open a planning commission seat vacated by Kato and accept letters of interest; a new planning commission appointment is expected at a future meeting.
The appointment fills the seat through the end of the 2025 calendar year; the council did not take action tonight on a subsequent election or on longer-term arrangements.
