MORAINE, Ohio — The Moraine City Council’s Committee of the Whole asked staff to prepare legislation to purchase a 2028 E-1 aerial ladder quint after the department’s current 2009 ladder repeatedly required repairs.
The council voted to request legislation to buy the apparatus at the meeting Thursday; the motion passed by roll call with five members voting yes and two members excused. The purchase price was discussed during the meeting; the staff packet identifies $1,705,095, while the motion as read by a councilmember listed $1,705,005.
The fire chief told the council the 2009 ladder has required frequent repairs. “It just broke down over the weekend. They had to come in and fix it,” the chief said, explaining why the department is seeking a replacement. The chief said the department has spent more than $64,000 on repairs since 2017 and that the current vehicle, if it reaches 2028, will be an exceptional service life.
Councilmembers confirmed the purchase is a budgeted item. The council did not vote on final purchase authorization; the formal legislation to approve and appropriate funds will be prepared for a future meeting.
The request to have legislation drafted was approved by roll call; the minutes show five members voting yes and two members — Miss Marcus and Miss Birgitte — excused.
Council staff said the expected delivery for the new ladder is fall 2028 and that the city is also expecting delivery of a previously ordered medic in April 2026.
