Henderson County schools honor utility workers, road crews and staff for ice‑storm response

The Henderson County Board of Education used its Jan. 21 meeting to spotlight community partners and internal staff who helped keep students learning and facilities functioning during recent ice and snow events.
Superintendent Dr. Bob Lawson and board members publicly thanked Henderson Municipal Power and Light, Kenergy, Kentucky Utilities, the City of Henderson public works, county road crews, construction partner Regal Incorporated and other responders for restoring power, clearing roads and maintaining Internet service that enabled the district’s NTI (non‑traditional instruction) days.
Brad Bickett, general manager of Henderson Power and Light, told the board: “We are we have an outstanding team of about 50 people. We provide electric, and Internet and phone as well to our community and proud to serve the school system.” Other utility and contractor representatives described extended shifts and field work to restore service and clear lines.
The board also recognized district maintenance and custodial staff for overtime work on parking lots, sidewalks and buildings; Dr. Lawson invited those internal teams forward to receive Pursue Excellence awards for their operational work during the storm. The board highlighted the interagency coordination that allowed schools to reopen after service restoration and road clearance.
In addition to the partner recognitions, the board acknowledged student achievements: Penelope (“Penny”) Highbarger of East Heights Elementary and Gareth Wilson of South Middle School were introduced as Judge’s Scholars selected by their schools.
No formal actions were required for the recognitions; board members emphasized appreciation and pledged continued partnership planning for weather events.
