Beloit council proclaims Martin Luther King Jr. Day; YWCA accepts proclamation

The Beloit City Council on Jan. 21, 2025, presented Proclamation 2025002 honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and encouraged residents to reflect on Dr. King’s teachings and participate in commemorative events.

The proclamation, read at the start of the meeting and presented by the council, recognizes Dr. King as “a visionary leader, Baptist minister, and civil rights activist” and cites his role in the Montgomery bus boycott, the Birmingham campaign and the 1963 March on Washington. The document records Jan. 20, 2025, as the federal Martin Luther King Jr. Day observed the previous day and states the council’s pledge to “continue fostering an inclusive community.”

Heidi Dyneger, speaking for the YWCA of Rock County, accepted the proclamation on the organization’s behalf and thanked the council. “The YWCA of Rock County just thanks everyone for this, prop for this resolution. It's really important in our community to continue to educate and create cultural competence so that people are welcoming and, get along and there's peace in our communities,” she said.

Kevin Day, identified in the proclamation as vice president of the council, presented the document on behalf of the City Council. Councilor Blakely was recorded as the council member associated with the proclamation item.

The presentation on Jan. 21 was made during the “special orders and announcements” portion of the meeting. No formal separate vote on the proclamation was recorded in the meeting transcript; the council presented the proclamation and attendees acknowledged the presentation.

The meeting lasted about 13 minutes and included no public hearings or public-comment speakers who had submitted forms in advance.
