During the public-comment portion of the Jan. 13 meeting, Jeremy Raley, who said he oversees Crime Stoppers of Southeast Texas programs across multiple counties, urged trustees to consider pay increases and certificate pay for district police officers to improve retention.
Raley told the board he oversees school-safety committees across more than 20 school districts and said Vidor ISD appears to have higher turnover among school officers than some neighboring districts. He argued that school officers play a frontline role in student safety and emphasized the value of tenured officers who become familiar to students over many years. Raley recommended examining pay and incentives so officers do not view the district as a stepping stone to other agencies.
The board did not take action during the meeting on the request; staff and trustees acknowledged the comment and said they would consider the issues raised.
