Board approves communication plan emphasizing community outreach, ASB engagement and advocacy tools
Summary
The Poland Public Schools Board voted to approve a board communication plan that replaces a costly CEE survey with a district survey, schedules board dinners, and encourages follow-up after a planned community listening session. The plan also discussed outreach to ASB and using a statewide "$1,000,000,000 bake sale" template for advocacy.

The Poland Public Schools Board approved a new Board of Directors communication plan during its Jan. 22 meeting, adopting measures meant to broaden community outreach and clarify how the board communicates with families and stakeholders.
Amanda Tanner, who led the proposal, said the plan replaces a previous CEE survey recommendation with a district-generated survey “to save the district some money,” adds two tentative board dinners (one in March/April and one in September/October) and calls for follow-up communication after a planned March community listening session.
The plan encourages closer engagement with the PHS Associated Student Body and student ambassadors so the board can educate students about advocacy and the legislative process. Tanner said the board should provide “a simple way for [the community] to communicate with legislators,” including step-by-step instructions on contacting state representatives and tracking bills.
Board member Lisa described a grassroots campaign she found online — the "$1,000,000,000 bake sale" — as a potential template for both fundraising and public education on district funding shortfalls. "…they put together some really nice flyers and even, like, a how to if you wanna put on your own event," Lisa said during the discussion.
The board agreed the communication plan would be a living document, with monthly check-ins to review planned topics and assign responsibilities. Amanda said board members should submit suggested edits by the Monday following the meeting so staff could vet changes for the next agenda.
A motion to approve the communication plan was moved and seconded; the board approved the plan by voice vote.
Ending: The plan will return to the board as a standing, living document; the district will coordinate timing for the survey and community listening session and follow-up outreach.
