Vidor ISD adds local policy option for standing order of Benadryl; parents retain consent control

The Vidor ISD board on Jan. 13 approved a second reading of a local policy change that allows the district to purchase and administer certain over-the-counter medications under protocols established by the district’s medical advisor.
The change to FFAC local was prompted by requests from district nurses and the SHAC (School Health Advisory Committee). The policy language adopted adds a third option allowing the district to maintain nonprescription medication to be administered in accordance with medical-advisor protocols and district administrative regulations. At the meeting, staff cited an email from the district’s TASB consultant confirming the approach as compliant with guidance and noted that the district’s medical adviser has agreed to provide a standing order for Benadryl.
Trustees emphasized that parental consent remains required: nurses will not give over-the-counter medication to students unless parents have preauthorized it during registration or otherwise provided permission, and parents retain the option to come to school to administer medication themselves. Board members asked for a follow-up report at the end of the school year to evaluate how the policy and protocols were working in practice.
The motion to adopt the second reading passed unanimously, 7-0.
