SANTA FE ISD is adopting technology regulations, driven by state guidance, to restrict TikTok on district‑owned devices, district technology staff told the board.
Corey Glick, the district’s technology staff member, said the district will block TikTok at the network level using its firewall and content filter. A narrow exemption exists for law‑enforcement investigations: TikTok can be installed on a district device off the network to allow an investigation, then removed when the investigation ends. Glick said personal devices connecting through the district Wi‑Fi will be behind the firewall and therefore blocked.
The policy will apply only to district‑owned devices, Glick said; staff may still produce content on personal devices outside of district Wi‑Fi and repost or share via other platforms. Several board members raised questions about how the change would affect public relations and school promotions; Glick said staff who create videos on personal devices can transfer content to other platforms for district promotion "but just because of the security concerns surrounding TikTok" they will not permit the app on district equipment during the school day.
Board members asked whether the restriction was a state or federal measure; technology staff replied it reflects state‑level direction and governor advocacy but applies only to district‑owned devices and district networks.
