Multiple district physical‑education coaches presented to the School Health Advisory Council on the role of recess and the FitnessGram fitness assessment in elementary schools.
Coaches told SHAC the district provides 45 minutes for lunch periods and typically allows a 15–20 minute recess that gives children a supervised opportunity to be physically active, practice social skills and creativity, and return to class ready to learn. Presenters described training for recess monitors and contingency plans when weather prevents outdoor play.
The coaches reviewed FitnessGram testing, which they said is administered districtwide to students in grades 3–12 (with exemptions for some athletes). Components listed included the PACER aerobic test, curl‑ups, push‑ups, trunk lift, sit‑and‑reach and shoulder stretch. Coaches described a district goal to have students meet the Healthy Fitness Zone and said teachers and PE staff set individualized improvement plans and use activities and incentives to motivate students.
Why it matters: presenters said regular recess and structured PE build lifelong healthy habits and help students focus in class. Coaches described partnerships (for example, with UTRGV/Steps program at some campuses) that reach kinder and first graders and track progress into later elementary grades.
Ending: Coaches encouraged parents to support at‑home activity, positive reinforcement, and communication with PE staff. They offered to share warm‑up videos and recommended parents contact coaches or campus staff for guidance.
