Interfaith Council outlines rising rental and utility assistance demand and impending food pantry relocation

Janice, representing the Interfaith Council (IFC), briefed the Contract Review Committee on Jan. 17 about sharply rising requests for rent and utility assistance, continued demand at the food pantry and an urgent need to move the pantry from its current NRTA location.
She said the pantry has grown — the IFC distributed food to approximately 2,004 households last year, a 21% increase — and that rental-assistance payouts have jumped recently; in December the IFC paid about $70,000 in rental aid to 48 households. She said referrals are increasing from the hospital and family resource center and asked the committee to factor relocation and program continuity into grant deliberations.
Nut graf: IFC said it is exploring two relocation scenarios: (1) a rental/primary-tenant arrangement with another nonprofit or (2) a purchase and modular construction where IFC would occupy ground-floor service space and workforce housing would be provided above. Janice said the current lease runs to June 30 and the town would likely allow another year, but longer-term solutions are needed.
The IFC also outlined utility-assistance programs (HEAP-related and direct vendor payments) and said the agency will seek an accountant and an operations/program assistant to strengthen internal controls and succession planning.
