Nantucket Lighthouse School sought town grant support on Jan. 17 to expand its free Educational Speaker Series, which brings national speakers on education, child development, mental health and diversity topics to the island.
Head of school Emily Miller and grant writer Stephanie Sarra told the committee the series dates to 2017, reaches in-person audiences of roughly 100 and a much larger online audience through livestreaming. “Each visitor reaches a hundred people in person, but we have a following of over 20,000 online,” Sarra said.
Nut graf: The School asked for funds to cover speaker fees, travel and accessibility costs — including translation and closed-captioning — and to pay for recording and production to expand the reach of sessions to those who cannot attend in person.
Miller and Sarra said the program fills a community need by supplying free professional development and public conversation; past speakers included education and mental-health experts. Committee members asked whether the School coordinates with other island venues, notably the Dreamland movie theater, which has hosted screenings in the past. Miller said the school welcomes partnerships and has worked with the Dreamland for film screenings and with Nantucket Community School to share outreach.
Ending: School leaders said the program is sustainable through a mix of school budget allocations, smaller grants and fundraising; they told the committee they could proceed with a reduced award if CRC funds are partial.
