PTG donations kick off Cicero Elementary playground project

The North Syracuse Central School District received a status update on a planned playground at Cicero Elementary and recognized a fundraising effort by the school’s PTG that will seed the project.
Joel Morey, a PTG representative for Cicero and Gillette, told the Board that the committee has been fundraising for several years and has already delivered an initial donation. “Everyone’s really looking forward to it,” Morey said, describing broad community support and multiple staff and specialist inputs to the design. He estimated typical fundraiser returns “between about 10,15,000.”
District presenters said the new playground design includes separate primary and elementary areas and accessibility features to meet ADA needs. The plan relocates the playground into the track area adjacent to the building, which the district said “provides flexibility” for future renovations and frees other spaces for parking or hard-surface play.
At the meeting a district representative said PTG donations are expected to cover roughly 15% of playground costs; state aid would offset the remainder, reducing the local tax burden. The district also said Cicero is part of a multi-year playground program that began in 2019 and has included recent or planned work at Main Street, Bear Road, Smith Road, Lakeshore and Roxboro Road schools.
The Board accepted the presentation and invited PTG and district staff to continue coordination on timeline and fundraising. No construction dates or final contract awards were provided at the meeting.
