Council approves four equipment purchases, authorizes traffic-signal and sewer bids; several measures pass as emergencies

Sylvania City Council on Jan. 21 approved four emergency ordinances to replace and add municipal equipment and authorized the administration to advertise for bids on a downtown traffic-signal modernization and a small sanitary sewer extension.

Council approved emergency ordinances to buy: a Hyundai HL940 wheel loader (net cost $155,150 after a $26,000 trade-in), an asphalt paving roller (purchase price $43,775), a 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo for public-service fleet use (purchase price $44,000, split across water and sewer accounts), and a Vermeer mini skid steer for parks and forestry ($37,500). Each ordinance was moved/read on the floor and adopted as an emergency measure by voice vote.

The purchases were presented by Service Director Joe Shaw, who described equipment condition, expected use and funding sources. Shaw said the existing 2008 wheel loader has reached the end of its useful life…
