Board approves architect contract for Cabell Midland STEM and cafeteria expansion

The Cabell County Board of Education voted to approve an architect and engineering contract with Edward Tucker Architects for a Cabell Midland High School STEM and cafeteria renovation, the board heard at its meeting.
The contract, listed as agenda item 4.03, covers design and engineering work for an approximately 3,000-square-foot addition to the existing dining area, creation of a dedicated flexible STEM space for robotics and other activities, and potential outdoor activity areas. Principal architect present for Edward Tucker described the plan as enlarging the dining room to improve seating and supervision, adding flexible furniture for larger student groups, and creating a multi-use STEM room for clubs and after-school programs.
Superintendent and staff said the project is funded through a $1,000,000 School Building Authority (SBA) grant with the remainder funded locally; presenters and staff described a current project budget of about $3,600,000 and estimated county share of roughly $2.6 million. The architectural fee quoted in board materials was approximately $269,820. Board members were told bids could be solicited in mid-summer if drawings proceed on schedule.
The contract was included on the consent agenda. The board approved the consent agenda by motion, which carried unanimously; the consent vote authorized the district to execute the Edward Tucker contract and proceed with design work and bid preparation.
Board members and staff noted options to reduce construction cost in the bid package (for example, using the existing HVAC system for part of the project and making outdoor elements bid alternates) and said the board will see construction bids before committing construction funds. The district said interior design and furniture packages are included in the contract scope.
The board approved the consent agenda motion to adopt the consent items, which included this contract. Staff said they will return later with construction bids and any alternates for the board to consider.
