FAYETTE COUNTY — Fayette County Commissioners approved sending a letter of intent to Volunteer West Virginia for a Day of Service grant that would reimburse up to $15,000 for volunteer trail work, signage and supplies tied to 9/11 remembrance activities.
A county presenter described the county’s existing partnership with the Fayette Trail Coalition and said the coalition already maintains a volunteer roster large enough to meet the grant’s requirement of 50 or more volunteers. The presenter said the grant would reimburse eligible expenses — for example signage, tools or a small pedestrian bridge — after the work is completed rather than providing up‑front funding.
Commissioners discussed outreach plans, including involving Boy Scout troops and local high schools in volunteer days scheduled between April and Sept. 11. The commission moved, seconded and approved a letter of intent to Volunteer West Virginia so the county can pursue the reimbursement grant and potentially dedicate a section of trail as a 9/11 remembrance feature.
Staff said any funds received would be reimbursement-based and that approved uses would be documented and submitted for payment after the work or purchases are complete.
