Syosset honors All-State musicians and National Merit commended students; arts coordinator outlines district arts goals

The Syosset Central School District Board of Education meeting included several arts and academic recognitions and a presentation on the district’s fine and performing arts curriculum.
Dr. Chris Hale, coordinator for fine and performing arts, introduced and praised All-State and All-National musicians from the district. Dr. Hale described the students’ achievements as “a result of years of dedication, countless hours of practice, and a deep passion for music.” The board and audience recognized dozens of students by name; two students performed earlier in the meeting as part of the All-State string ensemble.
Dr. John Durante, principal of Syosset High School, announced that 39 students were named Commended Scholars in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program, placing them among the top roughly 5 percent of entrants nationally. Durante listed the students and asked the audience to applaud their achievement.
In a longer presentation, Dr. Hale said the district’s arts programs aim to teach ‘‘habits of mind’’ — skills such as persistence, creativity, observation and collaboration — and to provide cultural experiences through museum visits and performances. He noted recent and upcoming opportunities, including chamber singers performing at Radio City Music Hall and student visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and thanked PTA arts committees for support.
