Superintendent reports enrollment study draft, pickup-patrol pilot and transport review; county still silent on Stillwell Woods

The Syosset Central School District presented several operational updates during the Board of Education meeting, including a draft enrollment study, a planned pilot of a dismissal-management tool, continued transportation-route analysis and outreach to county officials about Stillwell Woods Preserve.
Dr. Curry and Dr. Ruffo told trustees the district has received a first draft of an enrollment study and is working with the demographer to refine data and respond to facility concerns. The administration said a final draft will be available “very soon.” Trustees asked for a timetable and a road map from draft to final facilities discussion; Dr. Curry agreed to provide more definite milestones as the numbers are finalized.
On dismissal changes, the district said it is exploring Pickup Patrol, a vendor tool to allow parents and guardians to change student dismissal plans and to increase documentation and accountability. Two buildings were in training for a pilot; administrators emphasized the district’s priority on safety and said cutoff times for same-day changes vary by building though emergencies are honored.
Transportation remains under study: the district is working with a transportation consultant on the implications of changing school start times and the logistical challenge of sequencing about 140 buses across elementary, middle and high school routes.
Dr. Ruffo also updated the board on an Amazon pilot payment administered by the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency (IDA). She said Amazon has paid the county; the district was awaiting receipt of the first half of the pilot payment and that Nassau County and the IDA are still discussing the second half.
On the Stillwell Woods Preserve, the board said it had reached out to the county executive’s office; the office acknowledged the outreach but has not provided substantive contact. Trustees discussed convening county and town officials, the district and residents to pursue a solution and asked administrators to explore next steps.
