Syosset officials praise physical-literacy programs as bus routing, start times and space squeeze prompt scheduling study

Syosset Central School District officials on a school board meeting night praised student athletes and outlined a comprehensive physical education curriculum, then moved into detailed discussion about high-school start times, bus capacity and multi-year enrollment growth.

Superintendent Dr. Donald Rogers opened the presentation by placing the district’s athletics and physical education work in the context of “physical literacy” and asked Athletic Director Scott Stuber to present the program’s elements. Stuber described a K–12 progression that emphasizes basic movement skills at the elementary level and offers specialized options — including lifeguarding and Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification — for high-school students. “Students who aspire to earn lifeguard certification will learn all the necessary skills and techniques to save lives and prepare for the vigorous physical exam,” Stuber said.
