Syosset board hears $88 million facilities plan, administrators recommend $49 million near-term bond

Superintendent Dr. Rogers told the Syosset Central School District Board of Education at its August meeting that a district visual inspection identified roughly $88,000,000 in facility work, and administrators recommend putting about $49,000,000 of immediate priorities into the next bond while continuing about $23,000,000 worth of work through the annual operating budget.

That recommendation matters because the district is projecting an enrollment “bubble” at the high school in coming years and because some building systems the report flagged are near the end of their useful life. “We identified about $49,000,000 worth of immediate priorities that we would anticipate recommending in the district’s next bond issue,” Dr. Rogers said during the presentation.

Administrators and the district’s architect (H2M) and construction manager (Elite) described how the visual-inspection findings were stratified by five criteria — safety, infrastructure preservation, modernization needs (including ADA compliance), remaining useful life of systems and other factors — and how long lead times for equipment make early planning essential. The team warned that long manufacturing and state-approval timelines mean work should be contracted while systems are still functioning: vendors can take more than a year to deliver major HVAC or electrical components, the presentation said.
