State Board authorizes technical assistance, training and possible oversight for Bridgeport Public Schools

The Connecticut State Board of Education voted to authorize a set of interventions for Bridgeport Public Schools on the board’s determination that the district faces fiscal shortfalls, widespread special-education staffing gaps and persistent leadership instability.

Board members approved a resolution directing the State Department of Education to deploy a technical-assistance team to work with district leaders, require board training on fiscal oversight and policy, and reserve the commissioner’s authority to appoint a district improvement officer or to approve a permanent superintendent appointment under Connecticut General Statutes §10-223(e).

The board said the interventions are intended to be collaborative rather than punitive. Dr. Hughes, who presented the State Department of Education’s report, said, “All of these students deserve our undivided attention.” The presentation summarized finances, staffing and program concerns and recommended a three-part, phased approach to support the district.

Why it matters: Bridgeport serves roughly 19,591 students and employs about 1,600 certified staff, according to the State Department of Education briefing. The board said low academic proficiency rates, increasing special-education compliance complaints and a growing budget deficit create an urgent need for coordinated state support and local corrective action.
