Las Vegas planners promote Westside design guidebook as alternative to formal conservation districts

City planning staff on Jan. 22 told the Las Vegas Historic Preservation Commission that a draft design guidebook for the Historic West Side is about 85% complete and could be used as a non‑mandatory tool to guide future development so the area retains its historic character.
Michael Heil, planning project manager with the Department of Community Development, said the guidebook grew out of a detailed survey of West Side resources and a $209,000 Centennial Commission grant awarded in September 2023 to a consultant team led by KME Architects. Heil said the booklet is intended as an ‘‘informative guidebook’’ rather than a compulsory rule, and that it documents a locally distinctive mid‑century period, typical lot patterns and architectural features staff is trying to preserve.
