Board authorizes design work for Johns Creek culvert, elevated water storage and Field of Dreams resurfacing

The Southaven Board of Aldermen on Jan. 21 authorized three work orders to advance flood-control, utilities and parks projects.
City engineering staff, represented by Dan Cordell, asked the board to approve a work authorization not to exceed $315,000 for design and construction engineering/inspection (CNI) for the Johns Creek box culvert improvement on State Line Road east of Getwell Road. Cordell said the culvert enlargement is aimed at lowering flood levels that affect backyards in the Summerwood and Witten Place neighborhoods and that the city is using drainage funds with an ARPA match to begin the first phase rather than waiting for other funding.
The board also approved a work authorization not to exceed $370,000 for design, bidding and construction engineering/inspection of an elevated water storage tank. City staff said the utility system has about three to four years of required elevated storage remaining based on projected growth; two potential sites were identified, including an initial focus in the Central Park area. The authorization covers design and engineering only; later steps will include bidding and construction approvals.
Finally, the board authorized up to $50,000 to prepare bid documents and provide construction inspection services for resurfacing and rebuilding the Field of Dreams ballfield. Staff estimated the total project cost could be closer to $300,000 and said the motion authorizes design and bidding work only; the construction contract will be advertised and returned to the board for award.
All three motions were presented as work authorizations and carried by the board. City staff said the Johns Creek and elevated-tank work are part of MCWI programming and were scheduled earlier in the utilities capital plan but are being advanced to address current needs.
