Council authorizes purchase of modular container bar, refrigeration units for shipyard and near-term events

The Common Council approved authorization on Jan. 21 to purchase a two-story container bar and associated refrigerated equipment, with the amended motion capping the total at $55,000.
Alder Johnson, who proposed the amended purchase language, said the container would be used for NFL Draft-related music events in April and could later move to the Shipyard site as part of phased activation. Deputy Director James Anderson told council members the container and refrigeration equipment would arrive in time for draft-week events and could be used at Leicht Park in the short term.
The council debated optional accessories and a storage container recommended by event partners; Johnson’s amendment removed several nonessential accessories to reduce trucking and installation costs and added a $2,000 discretionary allocation to cover necessary signage or small items. Anderson said a 20-foot storage container was strongly recommended by event partners to house equipment and provide consistent appearance, but the approved amendment left that and other optional items to later procurement decisions.
The motion to approve as amended passed by voice vote. Staff will proceed with ordering and coordinating delivery so the unit can be available for the April events and later moved to the Shipyard for more permanent programming if approved.
