Multiple speakers representing the Green Bay School Board and the League of Women Voters urged the Common Council on Jan. 21 to add a line to property tax bills that discloses how much taxpayers pay toward private-school vouchers.
Laura McCoy, president of the Green Bay School Board, told council members the district will lose $12,776,000 to vouchers this year and asked for a clearer breakdown on tax bills. "The very least we can do is give [taxpayers] a tax bill that's accurate and truthful," McCoy said.
Speakers from the League of Women Voters and other community members framed the request as transparency for taxpayers rather than an attack on private or parochial schools. Dawn Smith, president of the League of Women Voters of Greater Green Bay, said the proposed line would give taxpayers information on how government funds are spent.
After public testimony, Alder Prophet moved to refer the matter to staff for study; Alder Proffitt seconded. Council members agreed referral was appropriate so staff could return with cost estimates and implementation details. The motion to refer to staff passed by voice vote.
