The Board of Commissioners approved acceptance of a Kentucky Office of Homeland Security grant to replace mobile data terminals, laptops and related equipment in the Newport Police Department.
Captain Kevin (presenter identified as Captain Drorham in the record) described the award as a state Homeland Security Grant focused on cybersecurity and operational readiness. The grant will fund about 46 laptops for vehicles, eight desktops for offices, docking stations for offices and thermal printers for patrol cars. The presenter said many of the department’s devices are six to ten years old, will soon reach end‑of‑support and risk noncompliance with Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) security requirements without replacement.
Meeting presenters said the grant award is $65,600 with a required 10% local match of $6,560 for a total project cost of $72,160. The upgrade is aimed at ensuring Windows 11 compatibility, CJIS compliance and improved cybersecurity posture, and to enable distance learning and training for officers. Thermal printers were chosen to avoid ink replacement issues in patrol cars, presenters said.
Commissioners praised the command staff for pursuing grants that stretch local resources and voted to accept the award and proceed with equipment purchases. The roll call vote to accept the grant was unanimous.
