Placerville planning commission approves Burning Barrel outdoor lights and wall-mounted heaters

The Placerville Planning Commission on Jan. 21 conditionally approved a site plan modification to add string lighting and two wall-mounted patio heaters at Burning Barrel Brewing & Spirits, 640 Main Street.
Planning staff summarized the proposal as a small modification to previously approved elevations that adds two radiant patio heaters and LED string lights along the building’s east-side outdoor seating area. Staff recommended the request for SPR 15-04-R2 be approved and noted the project is exempt from environmental review under CEQA Guidelines section 15301.
“ The lighting is gonna be mimicking the current string lights that go through Main Street, from about the courthouse to the bell tower,” applicant Duncan Alexander told the commission, adding the heaters would be mounted roughly 9 feet above the patio and controlled only by staff.
Staff and commissioners emphasized safety features during the hearing. Staff noted the lights would be energy-efficient, dimmable and set on a timer to shut off between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. Commissioners pressed about mounting height and fire risk; the applicant said the heaters would be installed at the manufacturer’s recommended commercial heights (about 8–11 feet) and angled downward to minimize contact hazards.
Commissioner Friend moved to approve SPR 15-04-R2 with the findings and conditions in the staff report; Commissioner Smith seconded. The commission voted 4–0 in favor. The approval is subject to the standard 10-day appeal period.
The commission record shows the approval covers only the lighting and heaters as submitted and conditioned; other elements of the original 2022 site plan remain unchanged.
