Bill Condon, grants coordinator with the Office of Homeless Services, told the Public Health & Safety Committee that staff have been managing cold‑weather shelter operations and processing associated data. Condon reported 6,453 total shelter nights and 1,375 unique individuals served during the shelter period, and said staff are importing Rescue Mission data into their reports.
April Calvin, director of the Office of Homeless Services, told the committee the department is waiting on a vendor to supply pillow protectors (quoted at about $0.45 per protector) before distributing donated pillows. Calvin said Council member Cooperman donated pillows but several donated items were used and cannot be reused without protectors; once the protectors arrive staff will sort usable items.
Council member Cooperman, speaking although not a committee member, encouraged outreach to hotels that rotate pillows and linens and suggested hotels may be a source of usable donations. Condon thanked council members for their support and said staff appreciate council engagement on the shelter effort.
No formal committee action on shelter operations was recorded in the transcript; staff presented the update and responded to council questions.
