The Mississippi House of Representatives completed opening proceedings Monday, approved routine procedural motions by voice vote, and set a slate of committee hearings before adjourning until 2 p.m. tomorrow.
Representative Randy Boyd of Itawamba led members in a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of the session. "May we have a very successful year," Boyd said during the invocation.
The chamber dispensed with reading the journal after Representative Powell moved to do so; the speaker called for a voice vote and said, "The ayes have it." The House also accepted a unanimous-consent request to dispense with the reading of bill introductions after Representative Haney asked for the body’s consent and no member objected.
Clerks announced the schedule for committee hearings tomorrow: Appropriations A will begin at 8:30 a.m. with mental health and at 10:30 a.m. with rehabilitation services; that committee will resume at 1 p.m. for Veterans Affairs. Other committees listed include University Medical Center at 1:30 p.m.; professional counselors at 2:30 p.m.; social workers and marriage and family therapists at 2:45 p.m.; optometry at 3 p.m.; massage therapy at 3:15 p.m.; chiropractic examiners at 3:30 p.m.; real estate appraisal at 3:45 p.m.; human services at 4 p.m.; and the Emergency Management Agency at 4:30 p.m. Additional committee meeting times and rooms were announced for Appropriations A, Judiciary A, Public Health, Public Property, Municipalities, Insurance, Banking, County Affairs and Forestry in the clerk’s office notices.
Members were also reminded that today was the deadline to file bills with the Legislative Services Office; the clerk said LSO would drop bills for members who had not yet submitted them unless another arrangement was requested.
After the announcements, the gentleman from Simpson moved to adjourn the House until 2 p.m. tomorrow. The motion carried on a voice vote and the speaker declared the House adjourned until that time.
The session included a brief travel/weather advisory noting freezing temperatures and urging caution for members traveling south; no substantive policy debate or final action on legislation occurred during the time recorded in the transcript.
