The reminder matters to lawmakers because the filing deadline shapes which proposals advance to committee this session. Senators were told to watch committee assignments: the HOA special fund subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee is scheduled to meet Monday at 1:30 p.m. in room 216, and Senate Appropriations Subcommittee No. 13 listed meetings on the schedule immediately after the floor session (military at 10:30 a.m.; veterans affairs at 11:15 a.m.).
Other procedural items included several requests for leaves of absence that were granted. Senator Frazier requested a leave and designated Senator Robinson to act in her place; Senator Kirby asked to excuse Senator Wiggins, who was attending a Senate-related conference, and that request was granted. Senator Polk requested an excused absence for Senator Parks to travel to Washington, D.C., for an inauguration event; that was also granted.
Senators also used the floor to introduce guests associated with the 20th Capitol Screening Initiative, sponsored by the Mississippi State Medical Association, and to welcome medical students, music therapists and other visitors in the galleries. The chamber heard an announcement that the Community Health Centers of Mississippi will host a legislative reception at the Westin at 5:30 p.m.
Senator Blackwell moved that the Senate "stand in recess until 5 p.m. today," and the presiding officer put the question; senators responded in the affirmative and the chamber recessed. The journal will reflect that the Senate stands adjourned until 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20.
No final votes on bills or substantive policy measures were recorded on the floor during the session covered in the transcript; the day focused on scheduling, committee notices and procedural motions.
