Commissioner Richardson announces state-approved career and technical high school pilot in Rockingham County

Commissioner Mark Richardson announced at the Jan. 21 meeting that Rockingham County will be among two counties in the state selected for a pilot career and technical education high school.
“We are looking forward to a recently approved arrival of a career and technical education high school here in the county,” Richardson told fellow commissioners. He said the program will begin with 9th grade students operating out of Rockingham County High School and later expand to a dedicated campus at Rockingham Community College. Richardson described the pilot as focused on health sciences, advanced manufacturing and construction and said the state legislature’s action enabled the approval.
Richardson credited the Rockingham County School System and Rockingham Community College for their roles in developing the program and said he expects it to provide career training that could lead to long-term employment opportunities within the county. He described it as a pilot program approved by the state that will serve as an example beyond Rockingham County.
No formal board vote was recorded on the announcement; Richardson presented it as an informational update during commissioner comments. County staff and school officials were thanked in the meeting for their work on the initiative.
