Lehi City Council members discussed two items tied to the newly created school district: which local nominee the interlocal board should forward to the Utah County Redistricting Advisory Committee, and whether the city should try to name the district now or leave the decision to the new school board and district staff.
Council members agreed to ask Mayor Johnson to propose Councilmember Heather as the city’s preferred nominee to the interlocal board that will recommend two representatives to the county redistricting committee; the interlocal group as a whole will submit names and the county will appoint the advisory committee members. The council discussed logistics for the interlocal meeting scheduled for 3:00 p.m. the following day.
On naming, council members expressed divergent views. Several members urged caution: naming can be emotionally charged and could become a campaign issue if chosen before voters elect a new school board. Others said a public, inclusive naming process could create community buy‑in if the district or Alpine School District runs a survey or a naming committee made up of parents, teachers and stakeholders.
There was no formal vote to set a district name. Council members generally agreed to let the interlocal board and the incoming school board drive the naming process and to avoid spending city funds on branding. Several council members suggested the district staff or school district administration (Alpine School District staff where applicable) could facilitate a public naming process and present final recommendations to the interlocal board or newly seated school board.
Ending: The mayor will carry the council’s nominee(s) to the interlocal meeting; the interlocal board and the county will complete the advisory committee appointments, and the naming question will be returned to the school district and its board for public engagement and a formal decision.
